Solo in Colo Meet-Up, Round 2, on September 28

As we promised after our last meet-up, Solo in Colo is hosting another chance to kick back during happy hour and meet your fellow solo and small firm bloggers.

This time, we’re bringing in some expertise: Mark Beese, president of Leadership for Lawyers. Before starting his own company, Mark was an in-house marketer for professional services firms. He is also a blogger and will be at the meet-up to give guests some insight into using your blog as part of your marketing plan.

So when is this fabulous happy hour? We’ll get started at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, September 28, at the Blake Street Tavern in the Board Room. Please RSVP to me at scrocker@cobar.org.

Also, if you’re interested in contributing to the Solo in Colo blog, this is a great opportunity for you to meet with the people who write for the blog now. We have some basic criteria here.

Hope to see you there!

John Grimley: Your Legal Business Development Plan Should Fit on a Single Sheet of Paper

A successful legal business development plan – whether for a solo practitioner, a legal practice group, a global law firm, a regional mid-size law firm, a senior level partner seeking to grow a 7 figure book of business into an 8 figure book of business – or anyone else who practices law – can be outlined on a single sheet of paper, and it would look like this:

  1. Focus on sales.  The most direct avenue from you to your prospective client – is the best avenue to take.
  2. Focus on expanding the number of prospective clients you are selling to every day.
  3. Identify and contact new prospective clients every day
  4. Work on advancing the ball with each prospective client on a daily basis.
  5. Review your lead list every day, update it, and begin selling again the next day.
  6. Be flexible when pricing your services.
  7. Offer services that meet the commercial needs of clients.  Update your service offer to meet the market.
  8. Be persistent, patient – and over time, your practice and income will grow beyond your expectations.
John Grimley specializes in assisting lawyers and other professional service providers create and implement comprehensive domestic and international business development initiatives. A licensed American lawyer, Mr. Grimley formerly served as a writer in the Executive Office of the President in the White House. He blogs at legalbusinessdevelopment, where this post originally appeared on August 26, 2011.

Ignite Presentations: Call for Presenters on the Topic of Pro Bono

Do you have a passion for pro bono work and its impact on society?

We are looking for speakers to talk for five minutes about their thoughts on pro bono. Ignite presentations are 5-minute presentations that feature 20 slides displayed for 15 seconds each. This is a fast-paced, fun, and thought-provoking way to get your point across. The Denver Bar Association held a similar event in June, which was a great success. Videos and more information about the previous presentations can be found here.

This round of presentations will be show-cased at the DBA Access to Justice Committee’s Pro Bono Week Kick-off event Monday, October 24, 2011 from 5:30 to 8 :00 pm at the law offices of Kutak Rock.

Interested in giving a presentation at this event? (You know you want to). Contact Heather Clark. This complimentary event will also feature guest speakers, light appetizers, and drinks.

Teddy Snyder: Get Out of the Office!

Social media is great, but it’s no excuse to sit at your desk and think you have completed your networking outreach. Meeting people in person is still the best way to connect. Real-time conversations allow you to gently probe for information about any potential need for your services, and your charm will come through in a way you just can’t achieve online.

Get Out There and Connect with Your Next Client

  • Identify where to do your networking. It might be at a professional event. Personally, I prefer to spend my networking time with potential clients at their industry’s events rather than with lawyers who are potential referral sources. But this should be an individual choice based on your practice area and where your business traditionally comes from. On the other hand, breaking with tradition might get you where you want to be. Maybe participating in a charity will have you hobnobbing with the right folks while working for a greater good. What about an alumni event—at various education levels right down to grade school? If no one else is getting the old gang together, maybe you should. The point is to get with people and let them know who you are and what you do.
  • Joining is not enough. Getting your name on a membership list isn’t marketing. Sitting in the back of a meeting or quietly eating your chicken breast dinner won’t get you there, either. Once you choose an organization, make the commitment to be active. Go to meetings regularly and get on the board.
  • Maximize the opportunity to mingle. While some events are specifically labeled as mixers, walk around before and after all the events you attend to meet people. After dessert is served (but not during any speeches), feel free to table-hop.
  • Put your nametag  to work. Wear your nametag on your right side so it is easily visible as you shake hands. If the type is small, write your first name in large letters. If you prefer a nickname to the name on the badge, write it on there. One networker makes a point to carry markers just for this purpose. Add your company name or perhaps your city if that would be helpful to the particular setting.
  • Introduce yourself. If people are standing in clusters, look for a group of three. It’s easier to join an odd-numbered group of people than an even-numbered one. Start with “Hi.” Introduce yourself and stick out your hand for a handshake.
  • Exchange business cards. After you’ve chatted for a while, if it seems appropriate, suggest swapping business cards, or ask if you may offer yours. When you are given a business card, be sure to write the date and event where you met on the back, and jot down any issues that came up during your conversation. If you offered to send something, say a copy of an article on a topic important to them, write that down as well—and make sure you fulfill your promise.
  • Keep the conversation going. Ideally, you will have a system to save and follow up on those promising business cards. Invite the person to join your LinkedIn network. Add their email address to your electronic newsletter distribution list. Diary a follow-up date to call the contact to get together.

Every networking contact you make is the first step toward another attorney-client relationship. So put down the mouse, step away from your computer and get out there!

Theda C. Snyder is an attorney and structured settlement broker with Ringler Associates. Teddy is a frequent speaker and has written four books on law practice management. More tips on networking can be found in her book, Women Rainmakers’ Best Marketing Tips, 3rd Edition (ABA, 2010). She also contributes to the Attorney at Work blog, where this post originally appeared on August 15, 2011.

Dinner in White: Bringing Paris to Denver for a “Secret” Fundraising Evening

The Denver Bar Association Young Lawyers Division would like to let you in on the “secret.” On Saturday, August 13, 2011, a Parisian tradition is coming to Denver for a magical evening in white under the stars.

Modeled after the Diner Blanc in Paris, the “Dinner in White” is a whole new way of conducting a fundraising event. Word about this unique gathering is spread solely by word of mouth and social media – no invitations are sent and the location of the dinner is kept top secret until one hour prior. Guests dress in all white, prepare a picnic dinner, and await the call at 6:00 pm revealing the secret location in Denver. Upon arrival, you will be dazzled and entertained. Sip on a French cocktail, shop in the Parisian marketplace, take a spin on the dance floor, do a bit of networking, or relax under the glow of the night.

Tickets are $50 per person (must be 21 to attend) and includes drinks and dessert. Purchase your tickets at www.dinnerinwhite.com.

The Dinner in White is hosted by the AMC Cancer Fund and all proceeds benefit the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
