Denver to Require E-Verify for Construction Contracts, Effective Oct. 1

Last night, Denver’s City Council voted 9-4 to require construction firms vying for a city contract to use the federal E-Verify program to validate new employees’ immigration statuses.

As the Department of Homeland Security’s website explains, “E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows an employer, using information reported on an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to determine the eligibility of that employee to work in the United States.”

This new rule will go into effect on October 1, but it is not the first time the City has considered and passed such a measure. Denver already requires this check for companies attempting to land a service contract.
