Colorado Gives: Wheels of Justice Cycling Team Pedals for Pediatric Cancer Patients

Colorado Gives: CBA CLE Legal Connection will be focusing on several Colorado legal charities in the next few days to prepare for Colorado Gives Day, December 6, 2016. These charities, and many, many others, greatly appreciate your donations of time and money.

woj-logoEach year, the Wheels of Justice Cycling Team rides in Colorado’s Courage Classic, a challenging 2-day bicycle tour covering 157 miles of mountain passes, in order to raise money for Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. The Wheels of Justice has contributed over $3 Million toward treating and researching cancer, as well as supporting patients suffering from cancer.

The Wheels of Justice Team was created in 2005 by Heather Purcell and Aaron Bradford. They formed a team of attorneys to participate in the Courage Classic with the underlying goal of being the top fundraising team each year. In its first three years, the Wheels of Justice Team raised more than $500,000 for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Since then, the Wheels of Justice Team has raised more than 3 million dollars. In 2016, the team raised $345,000 with 238 riders from various law firms, corporations, and nonprofit organizations.

The Wheels of Justice Team is always happy to accept new riders, be they experienced cyclists or weekend warriors. To join for the team, email or call (720) 323-2538.

The Team also accepts sponsorships. In 2016, Denver’s top law firms and businesses stepped up as sponsors, adding more than $110,000 to the team’s total raised for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Sponsorship information is available at

Individual donations are also accepted. Each team member is required to raise $300 in addition to paying the race’s registration fee, so donations can be made to individual riders or the team as a whole. Contact for more information.

Wheels of Justice Kicks Off Ninth Year in Courage Classic

WOJThe DBA and CBA sponsored Wheels of Justice Cycling Team hosted their kick-off event on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Denver Post building. The team, comprised of attorneys and non-attorneys who participate in the Courage Classic, gathered to celebrate the start of training and fundraising for the three-day, 157-mile cycling tour through the Rockies benefits Children’s Hospital Colorado.  In the past eight years, the Wheels of Justice has raised just under $2 million for Children’s Hospital Colorado, directing its funds to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

More than 70 people were in attendance and speakers included team captain Heather Leja, Dr. Tom Smith, and his former Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) patient Michaela Hennig who told her story. When she was 3, Michaela was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma on her leg and underwent more than a year of aggressive chemo, radiation, and surgery.  Today, Michaela is an active and poised 26-year-old who is getting ready to climb her first fourteener.  She said that she’s grateful not just for the terrific medical care but also for the way the CCBD allowed her to “just be a kid” through all of the challenges. Because of the incredibly positive spirit and great care at the CCBD, most of her memories of that time are very positive.

Wheels of Justice Raised Over $310,000 to Benefit Children’s Hospital

The Wheels of Justice cycling team was the lead fundraising team at the 2012 Courage Classic bike ride to benefit Children’s Hospital Colorado. This was the third straight year that the Wheels of Justice team was the top fundraiser. Over the past seven years, the team has raised over $1.6 million for the benefit of Children’s Hospital Colorado.

“Because of the Wheels of Justice and their commitment to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders we are able to expand our Program and to serve more children and families,” said Dr. Hunger, the Chief of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders with Children’s Hospital Colorado.

To celebrate their success, the Wheels of Justice team toured the Children’s Hospital facility on Thursday, November 8, 2012. They also heard from a Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders patient family and doctor, gave thanks to their amazing sponsors and recognized this year’s team MVPs. “This is a great way for team riders to really see the incredible work done at Children’s Hospital Colorado and lets them connect with the patients and families who are directly impacted by their fundraising dollars,” said Wheels of Justice Co-captain Heather Purcell Leja.

Help Wheels of Justice Fundraising End on a High Note

The first day of the Courage Classic ends on a high note. And by high, I mean that you bike to the top of Vail Pass. It was one of the only times on the ride that I thought, What kind of crazy people do this? It’s a question easily answered: the kind of crazy people who want to raise money for kids who are fighting for their health, maybe even so that someday they’ll have shot at Vail Pass, too.

The Courage Classic raises money for Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) and you participate by joining a cycling team. I joined Wheels of Justice, a team of lawyers (and friends of lawyers), which supports the CHC’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. They have a strong track record and strong leadership from Heather Purcell and others. Last year alone, they raised $250,156, making them the top fundraising team of the 2010 Courage Classic.

This year, the team has exceeded its 2010 fundraising by pulling in $265,056. This is an incredible accomplishment, but it’s not quite enough. We have friendly rivals in Gears of Courage, a team of doctors, patients, donors, nurses, and volunteers, which has blown away its previous fundraising efforts by pulling in $264,484.

It’s so close that we know we can still pull ahead with one final push. You can support Wheels of Justice riders and Children’s Hospital Colorado before August 31, 2011, by clicking here and donating to a rider.

Even better, you can plan to ride next year, July 21-23, 2012. I’ll see you at the top of Vail Pass.

The 2011 Children’s Hospital Courage Classic is July 23-25, and consists of three consecutive, fun-filled days of riding up mountain passes during the peak of Colorado’s glorious summer. The 157-mile trek through the Rockies supports The Children’s Hospital.

Over the last five years, one-million dollars has been raised for the hospital by the Wheels of Justice Cycling Team, sponsored by the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations. (And the riders, sponsors, and volunteers all felt like a million bucks after working together to achieve that goal).

In 2011, please help us make an even bigger difference for the kids, doctors, and families at the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Been itching to get that bike up to the mountains? Join as a Wheels of Justice rider and enjoy terrific benefits, including cool team gear, weekend training rides, coaching sessions, and great events. The team currently stands at 160 members (15 shy of their goal of 175).

Or, join as a Wheels of Justice sponsor and you’ll become one of Denver’s top law firms in receiving excellent publicity and benefits. This year’s fundraising goal is $200,000. They’re over halfway there and they need your help to make that goal a reality!
